Silver nitrate firing sticks are used for chemical cauterization. Silver nitrate acts as a bactericide, astringent and causes scabbing, while when used with water it leads to denaturation of proteins and consequent tissue death. Potassium nitrate aims to mitigate the effects of silver nitrate.
Application areas:
Silver nitrate burn sticks are a proven method for removing growths that can form during the healing process of wounds on the skin, such as in surgical cavities with granulation tissue. Suitable for use in wound care and treatment, ostomy care and the treatment of aphthous stomatitis. They are used to stop nosebleeds or after bleeding after a biopsy or when electrocautery would be too complicated or painful.
Common applications include wart removal and podiatry (such as for corns). In newborns, a burning stick can easily remove the remains of the umbilical cord, with the procedure to be carried out by a doctor or midwife. The procedure is quick, easy and mostly completely painless.
Different groups of medical personnel have their own preferences, and there are no formal recommendations for stick length or material.
Usage:
Silver nitrate burning sticks should be used by qualified personnel, with the exception of wart removal. First, the head of the firing stick should be moistened with water. There is no need to moisten the tip if the place where the stick is to be used is sufficiently moist. The goal is to apply a liquid enriched with silver nitrate to the area of application. Stick repeatedly in the desired location. Do not press it down hard. The treated area discolors and then separates from the surrounding tissue for several days. Skin color change may take up to 24 hours. If necessary, the procedure should be repeated every 2-3 days until the desired effect is achieved. Silver nitrate sticks should be spot-applied to the affected area and are for single use only.
Warnings and Precautions:
- In newborns and people with sensitive skin, contact of the stick with the skin should be as short as possible.
- For any skin lesions that have an unusual color or unusual shape that cannot be clearly identified as granulation tissue or individual warts, SILVERIN® silver nitrate sticks should be used only under medical supervision.
- Protect clothing and other items when using the stick. Silver nitrate causes brownish-black stains that cannot be removed with common cleaning products.
- Healthy skin that inadvertently came into contact with the head of the firing stick should be thoroughly cleaned with a sponge under running water, with a harmless change in skin color to dark in this area. After approx. 10-14 days this darkening subsides.
- If the burn stick comes into contact with your eyes, immediately flush your open eyes with running water for at least 5 minutes without interruption and then consult a doctor.
- When using in the mouth, it is essential to take care not to swallow any part of the head of the stick. This can cause serious health complications.
